According to a latest report from Cloudmark, up to 40 per cent of new Facebook profiles could be fictitious registrations (fake profile) created by spammers and malware writers to infect end users, security firm Cloudmark has warned.

Neil Cook, the European head of technology services at Cloudmark told vnunet.com “once set up with a portfolio of fake profiles, virus writers encourage users to click on links to malicious sites by including them on postings on other users’ walls or blogs.” Another tactic is to try and get users to visit their profile pages through friend requests or personal messages. The profile page then redirects visitors to a malware site.

Facebook is now suffering from the same challenges that plagued MySpace. MySpace had serious issues with spam early on which ended up driving many users away from the sight. This will continue to be one of Facebooks most important focuses over the coming months.

“Social networks are very collaborative so it’s great for spammers and virus writers to attack,” said Cook. “As soon as social networking took off, so did the attacks.”

Cook also predicted that SMS spam would eventually seep into the UK market, spreading from China and other Asian countries.

It really a headache for social networks to verified whether a social profile was genuine. Educating users of how to use social platform safely was very important and i think social networks should pick up this resposibility and educate their users, what to share and what not to share !

From 29th August 2008, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) started in Malaysia and prepaid users may change their cellular phone providers, if they wish, and still keep their mobile phone numbers.

For the time being, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) – will be available in the Klang Valley on a limited basis. In two weeks’ time, post-paid users will also be able to enjoy the service. The nationwide launch of the service will be in October. MNP takes away the inconvenience associated with switching service providers. Consumers will no longer need to worry about losing their contacts when changing service providers.

JerryOng.com also write an article introduce about What is MNP on 2007. In simple example, you can maintain your 016 numbers (digi) but switch the service provider to Maxis, vice versa !

What is the Cost?

Service providers are allowed to charge up to RM25 each time a subscriber changes his/her service provider. This will give mobile phone users choice and freedom to choose their service providers without the inconvenience of having to change their numbers.

Those who wish to sign up for the service are advised to contact any of the mobile service providers – Celcom, Maxis, DiGi and U-Mobile. Each of these companies will have five service centres all over the Klang Valley to entertain MNP requests.

MNP Limitation?

MNP is about improved service quality, better packages, better customer service and giving consumers choice. Initially, only individual account holders will be able to change their service companies. Business accounts may do so after the nationwide launch in October. Subscribers are advised that until the nationwide launch, each service provider will only be able to accept 100 requests per day. However, additional requests will still be accepted but placed in queue for the following day.

Prepaid users are advised to finish their prepaid balances before they change their service providers as any remaining balances will not be refunded. Subscribers are advised not to rush into porting but should first study the various packages being offered before choosing the new service provider of their choice.

Subscribers can refer to the Frequently-Asked-Questions on Mobile Number Portability on SKMM’s website at www.skmm.gov.my, and all of the mobile operator’s websites to find out more about the location of the service centres, MNP in general, the porting process and its benefits.

My Two Cents

I have friends who always complain about their service Provider (specially heng han) but due to their personal mobile number already widely recognize by friends and business contacts, which make a hard decision on changing mobile number (service provider) but now with MNP implement in Malaysia, we’re able to do so anytime and this is also encourage service provider in Malaysia provide better service and more competitive price to consumer in order to keep their existing customer and also recruit competitor’s consumer.

How to Stay Safe on Facebook?

They following is some tips and tricks of how to social Safe on Facebook after
i google for Facebook Security topics.

Step 1:    Privacy
Face book allows you complete control over your information on site and access
to material that other users have said they want to share. To protect your
privacy and set how private your want your profile to be, go to your profile,
and click on ‘Privacy’ in the top right of the screen. Here you have different
options.

Step 2:    Profile

First look underneath ‘Profile’. At the top Facebook will
tell you what your current privacy settings are and what people can see. Under
‘Profile’ it states that your friends can always see your profile – which is
standard. But you can choose whether you want people in your networks or some
of your networks – which you can select – are able to view your profile.

Step 3:    Contact information

Under ‘Contact information’ you can select whether just your friends, your
friends and your networks, or just your friends and some of your networks can
view your instant messenger screen name, your mobile phone number, your
landline, your address, and your website, and your email address.

Step 4:    Profile Features

Under ‘Profile features’ you can determine who can see each of your profile
features. Again you can select whether you want just your friends, your
networks and your friends, or just your friends and some of your networks to be
able to view your friends, tagged photos, posts, wall, groups, online status,
and status updates.

Step 5:    Search

Once you are happy with your privacy settings, click ‘Save’ to go back to your
privacy settings option page. If you like you can adjust the search settings to
determine how easily you can be found with the search engine. Facebook tells
you your current settings at the top. Under ‘who can find me in my search’ you
can select who can find you – whether it’s just your friends, or a combination
of your networks and friends, or everyone. If you select something other than
everyone, you can un-tick the boxes below to be more specific. You can remove
people in college networks, high school networks, company networks, regional
networks, and people with no networks and make them unable to search for you.

Lastly you can limit what people are able to do when they
find you. You can stop them from seeing your picture, sending you a message,
poking you, adding you as a friend, and viewing your friend list. Click ‘Save’
to save your settings and return to the privacy options page.

Step 6:    News feed and mini-feed privacy.

If you click on ‘News feed and mini-feed privacy’ in the privacy settings page,
you can adjust what people can and can’t see in their feeds. At present, face
book will publish ‘Stories’ about any changes you make to your profile and
other people in your friend list will be notified of what you’re up to. So in
this section, you can deselect certain story topics so people won’t see them
when you change them. For example by deselecting ‘Write a wall post’ – your
friends won’t be notified when you write on someone’s wall. You can also remove
‘Show times in my mini-feed’ which will get rid of the clock next to the news
feed story. Click ‘Save’ to exit and return to the privacy settings page.

Step 7:    Poke, Message and Friend Request

When you contact someone through a poke, message, or friend request, Facebook
lets that person see part of your profile temporarily, even if your privacy and
network settings would usually prevent him or her from seeing your profile.
This helps that person identify who you are before they respond. You can select
what information you’d like them to see using the check boxes below. For
example, at the moment people can see Basic info, Personal Info, Education
Info, Work Info, Friends and Posts. You can add to this by selecting or
deselecting any of these boxes.

Step 8:    Notes

If you click on ‘Notes’ in the privacy settings page, there are options to
restrict who can see your notes. Like in other privacy settings you can select
just your friends or a combination of your networks and friends. You can even
restrict viewing access to just yourself. You can select who can comment on
your notes. Choose from ‘Anyone’, ‘only my friends’ or turn ‘Comments’ off
completely. You can select who can subscribe to your notes. Select, ‘anyone who
can see my notes can subscribe to my notes’ or ‘no one can subscribe’. Click
‘save’ to save your changes and exit.

Step 9:    Facebook Platform

Click on ‘Facebook platform’. This is simply a place where you can determine
what people can and can’t see when your friends are using certain sites and
applications, like those in Facebook’s product directory, where some of your
information may be made available. If you click on ‘Product directory’ you can
see what these sites are. So select and deselect any sections of your profile
that you don’t want people to view, and click ‘Save’ to save your settings and
exit.

Step 10:    Blocking people

If you want to completely sever any ties with a person on Facebook, simply
search for them in the ‘Block people’ option, and block them. Once you block
someone, they will not be able to search for you, see your profile, or contact
you on Facebook.

Step 11:    Limited profile

This option allows you to enter people from your friend list and select them as
being only able to see your limited profile. If you click on ‘Edit settings’
under limited profile, you can select and deselect which aspects of your
profile limited users are able to see.

Step 12:    Reporting abuse

Facebook advises you to not hesitate to report something you see as abuse on
the site. In most cases you will find a ‘Report’ link below a picture or other
piece of content, such as a wall post. When you select this, Facebook lets you
specify what type of abuse it is and make a confidential report. The Facebook
authorities will then study it and decide what action to take. If someone is
harassing you, Facebook recommends blocking them immediately in the ‘Block
people’ option on the privacy settings page to cease any further contact
between you and this person.

Last But Not Least…..

DO NOT Upload any sensitive information or “Private Photos” (unless you
wanna be next Edison) to Facebook. That is the best way
to prevent unwanted information leakage.
